KNIPEX pliers are designed for professional performance, precision and durability. However, even the highest-quality tools require regular maintenance to perform at their best.

Proper tool care helps prevent corrosion, ensures smooth operation and extends the lifespan of your tools. This guide covers essential maintenance steps to keep your KNIPEX tools in optimal working condition.

Why Proper Hand Tool Maintenance Is Important

Recommended Cleaning Steps

1. Cleaning

Cleaning your pliers should be part of your regular workflow, particularly after use in dirty or damp environments.

Key steps:

  • Remove dirt, dust and grease using a clean cloth and lukewarm soapy water. *Avoid using harsh chemicals, as these may damage the tool’s surface finish or coatings.

  • If required, a fine rubber sanding sponge (SFK 655) can be used to gently remove rust from the tool surface (only for non-chrome plated tools).

2. Drying

Moisture is one of the main causes of rust. Ensuring your pliers are completely dry is essential to prevent corrosion.

Best practice:

  • Dry tools thoroughly with a clean cloth

  • Ensure joints and pivot points are moisture-free.

*If no additional maintenance is planned after washing, the joint should be flushed with spray oil from a pressurised can. This helps displace any residual moisture, which cannot be effectively dried in this area.

- Avoid leaving tools in damp toolboxes or vehicles overnight

Proper drying is a simple but effective way to prevent long-term damage.

3. Oiling

Lubrication is critical to maintaining the performance and longevity of your pliers.

Lightly apply oil to:

  • The pivot joint (on both sides) to ensure smooth movement

  • Open and close the tool several times so the oil is well distributed in the joint

  • Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away excess oil.

Use oil sparingly. Excess oil can attract dirt and debris, which may affect performance over time.

A tip from our Project Management Team: For oiling the joints, use a very thin, penetrating oil, such as Ballistol, WD40 oil, sewing machine oil, or precision mechanic oil. A thicker oil or wax to protect the "bare" steel on versions 01 / 02 / 08 from corrosion.

4. Spare Parts

Many KNIPEX pliers feature replaceable components, allowing you to maintain performance without replacing the entire tool.

Common replaceable parts include:

  • Push buttons

  • Cutting wheels

  • Blades

  • Springs in assisted-opening pliers

  • Check out the full range of available spare parts on our website.

Regular inspection and timely replacement of worn components will keep your tools functioning as intended.

5. Store Pliers Safely

Storage conditions have a direct impact on tool longevity.

Recommended storage practices: Keep tools in a dry, organised toolbox or storage system like the KNIPEX Modular X18 backpack.

Avoid exposure to humidity and temperature fluctuations Use tool rolls or organisers to prevent unnecessary wear

Proper storage ensures your tools remain protected and ready for use.

Consistent care ensures your KNIPEX pliers continue to deliver the performance professionals rely on. By incorporating simple maintenance steps into your routine, you can significantly extend tool life and maintain precision over time.
