Vanlife - Made in Italy
Today we have the pleasure of interviewing the guys from ZenithVan, a start-up company specializing in custom van fittings. In Daniele's carpentry shop, south of Milan, Dani, Fede and Ivan transform each vehicle into a completely unique hideaway on wheels, made according to the needs and dreams of their customers. Their passion for handmade things, nature and sports is reflected in every project they create.
How did this adventure begin?
“I started making my own van, a little bit for me, to go surfing, and also a little bit to challenge myself, to see if I could do it,” says Daniele. No need to add that this particular van turned out great and it all started from there.
Ivan, on the other hand, had been following Zenithvan for some time: “I dreamed of getting into this, I hoped for it until the day they posted on social that they needed someone and that they were starting with the first interviews and I jumped in.”
What are the challenges you face every day?
“In a craft job like this the unexpected is always behind the next corner,” Ivan says. But they confess to us, jokingly, that even putting shelves and tiles on a level is quite a challenge!
What gives you the most satisfaction?
For Ivan it is “Creating something with your own hands.” “...and making everything, but everything custom!” adds Dani.
What would you recommend to someone who wants to start this profession?
A lot of passion, patience and willpower, “a few moves that work well, and it's not like we're improvising as outfitters.” Both Dani and Ivan are in fact woodworkers and had very specific skills before starting.
What impact does the tools’ quality have on your work?
“Seventy percent depends on our hands and 30 percent on the tools. Tools are fundamental. To work better , faster, and easier.”
